Most programs use Week 2 to work out kinks. Texas gets Ohio State.
The Buckeyes visit Austin on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC — a rematch of the 2024 College Football Playoff semifinal that ended Texas’ season. The Horns open against Texas State the week before, then step straight into national-TV territory with a roster that returns Manning, Goosby, Simmons, Biles, and enough preseason buzz to fill a broadcast truck.
Win, and Steve Sarkisian’s team buys early playoff equity before SEC play opens at Tennessee on Sept. 27. Win, and Manning gets a signature moment against elite competition. Win, and Will Muschamp’s return as defensive coordinator has a headline before October.
Lose, and the same old questions return about whether this roster can finish what it starts in big games.
Ohio State does not need Texas to be ranked for this to matter. The history is already baked in. The 2024 meeting had the same stakes and the same audience. Texas is the home team this time.
We will be closer to kickoff before this becomes a true game preview. For now, circle the date.
