The Volts got run-ruled 13-5 in six innings on opening night in Oklahoma City, but they weren’t quiet all night. Tiare Jennings cleared the bases with a grand slam to right in the third — her first hit of the season — and Texas pulled within 6-5.
Spark rookie Maya Johnson (Belmont, National Pitcher of the Year) shut the door from there: 10 straight retired after the rally, complete game.
The damage started when Rachel Garcia walked two and booted a play in the second. Maya Brady hit a grand slam. Sydney Romero followed with a solo shot. None of the six second-inning runs were earned.
Jennings finished with four RBI. Game two of the series is tomorrow.
